Safer spaces

Safer spaces at Hurja Piruetti

Hurja Piruet's staff and students have collaboratively defined the principles of a safe space, which we follow in our operations. We want to create a safe and comfortable space for everyone, where positive experiences encourage learning. Open interaction, tolerance and respectful encounters guide our activities.

For us, a safe space means that everyone has the freedom to be themselves, to express themselves freely and to be involved in all activities. In a safe space, all harassment is strictly prohibited. Harassment is any action or behavior that is oppressive, creates a hostile and unpleasant atmosphere, or threatens a person or group of people.

Respect

  • Everyone's personal physical and psychological condition and the right to self-determination.
  • We respect the privacy of others and remember that everyone defines their own physical and psychological boundaries. We respect different students and teachers.
  • We speak to each other encouragingly and respectfully.

Give space

  • We don't make assumptions about others.
  • We let everyone set their own limits.
  • We do not touch another without permission.

Spot on

  • Others as equals. We give space for discussion, we listen and we are open to the diversity of participants and different opinions.
  • We are ready to learn and develop. We take care of our own and others' well-being as best we can.
  • We give everyone peace of mind.
  • We'll do our best, that's enough.

About information

  • Your own presuppositions and critically examine your thinking. Do not consider your own views to be the only correct ones. Don't make assumptions about other people's gender, background, family relationships or opinion, for example.
  • Do your part to break down stereotypes.
  • We promote the spread of correct information and prevent the spread of false information. Think and anticipate. Note that your own established way of thinking can sometimes offend others.

Know and intervene

  • The identifier intervenes in discrimination, harassment and improper treatment. Intervention is everyone's job. Learn to recognize harassment and other inappropriate treatment and deal with it by addressing the matter calmly, if possible, already in the situation.
  • Don't discount someone else's experience. Apologize if you have intentionally or unintentionally offended others. Also try to identify your own power structure in relation to others.
  • Behave in a matter-of-fact way and expect it from others as well.
  • Do not accept bullying, harassment or discrimination, but intervene and/or tell the teacher about it.

Maintaining a safer space is the responsibility of everyone participating in the activity. It is acceptable to address problematic language or behavior. Everyone makes mistakes sometimes. However, do not belittle your behavior and apologize if you have offended someone, even unintentionally.
